CELEBRATION--Established in 1997, Florida Hospital Celebration Health answered the call as the health cornerstone in the development of Disney’s planned community, Celebration. Much more than an ordinary hospital, the Mediterranean resort-style facility is part of the seven-facility Florida Hospital, which itself is part of a network of 17 hospitals comprising the Adventist Health System-Florida Division.
When the Disney Corporation decided to construct a new town near its Disney World complex, it sought proposals for the construction and management of a hospital as part of that community. Florida Hospital won the competition. From its earliest stages of planning, the new hospital was envisioned as a state-of-the-art physical environment that would promote healing. The setting incorporated architectural components that were considered cutting-edge — the extensive use of natural light and gardens, patient rooms and other spaces that were designed to encourage family involvement, artwork, and sound-management techniques. The idea was to create a welcoming environment for patients and families — not the intimidating hospital atmosphere of the past.
Osceola County is one of the fastest growing counties in the United States and today, Celebration Health celebrates a decade of serving patients while looking ahead to increased growth. In the latest move to accommodate a growing number of patients, Celebration Health plans to add four new operating rooms, bringing the total number of ORs to 11. In addition, the hospital will add new technology, shell space, and space for support services.
Surgery volumes have grown substantially during the past three years. The new ORs will allow greater capacity to accommodate the growing surgical volumes, and also will showcase new technology, including robotic surgery, OR integration, and 3-D technology. Because the hospital’s ORs are on the third floor, the first and second floors will also be expanded. The first floor will contain support services such as materials management, and the second floor will contain shelled space for future growth. Celebration Health plans to begin construction in the first quarter of next year. The cost of the project is approximately $16 million.
The long-term master plan for Celebration Health includes two new patient towers. If funding is secured soon, work could begin in 2008 on one of the new patient towers. That patient tower would be approximately 120,000-square-feet and would include 120 patient beds at an estimated cost of $125 million.
To meet the escalating needs of the community, Celebration Health in 2007 added a 10-bed Rapid-In-And-Out (RIO) Unit and six new Emergency Department (ED) beds, bringing the total number of ED beds to 28. The hospital also expanded the ED waiting area, which now seats nearly 70, and added a play area and business center in the ED waiting area.
The hospital intends to expand to 350 beds by 2015. In addition to the usual range of services, Celebration Health has a Cancer Institute, a Surgical Learning Institute, a large and active Lifestyle Enhancement Center, a Pain Center, and state-of-the-art imaging services.
