Compliance standards for the construction of healthcare facilities were mandated by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) that are specific to the impact of exposure of airborne pathogens during construction and their impact on the health, safety, and welfare of patients, caregivers, workers, and employees during the construction process. The Joint Commission sets standards for healthcare organizations and issues accreditation to organizations that meet those standards.
The release of environmental microorganisms during construction, resulting in Healthcare Acquired Infections (HAI) is well documented and established. Nearly 7000 patients die annually as a result of exposure during this type of construction.

TGH/USF surgeons Report First “Hidden Scar” Surgery Combining Hysterectomy, Gall Bladder Removal
TGH/USF Health physicians from General Surgery and OB/GYN worked together to perform the combined minimally-invasive procedure.
USF Health surgeons at Tampa General Hospital recently removed the uterus and gall bladder of a 37-year-old woman, operating through a single entry point — the patient’s belly button. The advanced minimally invasive procedure, known as “hidden scar” or more formally know as Laparoendoscopic Single-Site Surgery (LESS), left virtually no scar and the patient went home the next day.
Shortly after performing the combined hysterectomy and gall bladder removal using LESS, the USF surgeons successfully performed the first single-incision laparoendoscopic procedure to remove an adrenal gland tumor. They have also used single incision laparoendoscopic techniques to remove appendixes and liver cysts, to repair hernias, and to treat acid reflux disease and achalasia (a disorder of the esophagus).
The combination operation was performed the end of February at Tampa General Hospital by Alexander Rosemurgy, M.D; Sharona Ross, MD; and Kellie McFarlin, MD, all from the USF Health Division of General Surgery; and Dr. Stuart Hart.
Cancer Patients Can Receive All Treatment Options at New Largo Center
Gulfcoast Cancer Institute and Gulfcoast Oncology Associates have joined forces to open a state-of-the-art cancer center to better serve the needs of people in the Tampa Bay area. This 20,000 square-foot center is centrally located in Largo on Highland Avenue, just north of East Bay Drive. Gulfcoast Cancer Center – Largo provides radiation oncology, medical oncology, and advanced diagnostic imaging services. All physicians use a shared electronic medical record system to provide the most effective and coordinated care for the patient. A combination of all of these services offered in one location is a first for Pinellas County.
While having the newest technology available is important, the cancer care team is the key to each person’s well-being. “GCC-Largo is a really exciting opportunity for me as a physician because it offers the ability to combine new cancer treatment modalities in a single outpatient setting,” said Dr. Michael Gauwitz, a radiation oncologist at GCC - Largo. “Our approach to cancer care potentially gives patients the highest level of quality care similar to what they would receive if they went to a tertiary cancer care center. But, in this case, treatment would be near the patient’s home, thereby avoiding the stress and financial drain of needing to travel a significant distance for their cancer care.”
